I am a jazz fan and I’ve been listening to PuroJazz since before there were podcasts. Curator & DJ Roberto Barahona used to put these nightly radio shows up on the website of the station that broadcast them (in Chile) and I got hooked. (I’m listening to it right now on a transcontinental flight!). Barahona has both an encyclopedic knowledge of the music AND impeccable taste. The podcast is all music, no ads, and is roughly one hour long. The music is phenomenal – a wide and rich range of all genres of jazz with an emphasis on highest-intensity post-bop and thoughtful modern jazz alongside many less well-known or up-and-coming players. A couple of shows a week (or more) are dedicated to the giants of early to mid-20th century jazz. It’s not uncommon to hear King Oliver or Fats Waller on PuroJazz. But if it’s not your cup of tea, just listen to the more contemporary music. Back to the most current jazz: Barahona regularly finds young talent early and sometimes even helps further the players’ careers e.g. Melissa Aldana. Some of the stuff is just earth-shatteringly good and Barahona’s brief commentary in ever-so-clear Spanish is insightful and illuminating. (I don’t even really know Spanish that well but the points and the diction are so crystalline that much of the meaning comes through.) For years, I’ve discovered some of my favorite music through listening to PuroJazz and it’s time others got turned on to it too. Enjoy! https://www.purojazz.com/ P.S. Though I listen regularly to some excellent jazz radio stations – e.g. KCSM, WBGO and WRTI – I know of no podcast like this in English. If someone does, please post a comment!
